HÅKON KORNSTAD

Mit völlig unterschiedlichen Projekten, so der groovigen Ambient-Jazz-Gruppe Wibutee und dem freiimprovisierenden Trio Tri-Dim, steht [Kornstad] für den vielgesichtigen Aufbruch der Szene von Oslo. Kornstads Ton ist kräftig, fast wütend, und doch ist sein Spiel auch sensibel, geschmeidig und voller Feinheiten. Er weiß die ganze Bandbreite des Jazz mit mannigfaltigen Ausdrucksformen der zeitgenössichen Pop-Musik zu verbinden, ohne dass es zu Brüchen oder oberflächlichen Unschärfen käme. Lovely bit of Bugge Wesseltoft-produced jazz spanning scratchy moodscapes with breathy sax and voice tones to bouncy driving bass lines and vocal hooks. Modern production values of the low-fi headz school combine with a live band to produce a nice parcel of hip Norwegiana; there’s a soulful opening, with deep bowed double bass and calm eddies of sound into which a strong thick plucked bass riff and a subtle jazz swing drops; a screaming sax follows. It lights it up. As it evolves the records goes for a more textured and downtempo feel with old spoken-word samples crackling in the background. Both the vocalist’s spoken and singing voice are sensitive and strong, avoiding the pitfall of the generic plaintive, whispering beats combo and you can hear the influence of the drum and bass dancefloor in the drumming, but ‘influence’ is how it remains: no programming clones these. – these people are trying to make jazz, not just offer a nod in the right directions.
